Germans (mainly) - What's with the Hasselhoff?

I am genuinely curious here... What is it about David Hasselhoff that has made him popular over there? The man is a terrible singer, he's extremely corny, and apparently somewhat arrogant.

What is his secret? Is he just good looking or something?

His stupid car was the breakthrough. He was recently on German Tv. I think on RTL, singing. At least he was trying to sing!
He is not ugly but he looks somehow like the idiot nextdoor. Sometimes such people reach higher places than true talents. Nobody said the world is a fair place to be!
