it's definately not red. And while green is close, it's not that either. Actually, the most visible and catching color to human eyes is a combination of the yellow and green... you know that pukey yellowish color that they're painting fire trucks these days? that's the one. and actually, red is a terrible color for traffic lights, since red/green colorblindness is the most common of all types of being colorblind (which is why you rarely see traffic signals that are horizontal... only verticle to distinguish for the colorblind).

Most visible is Green. Most attractive is an opinion based answer.
The eye has twice as many green cones than it does red or blue.
Nightvision goggles use this for our advantage because the human eye can distinguish over 1 millions shades of green. This allows us to see extreme detail in very low light circumstances.

Its the RED. Thats why we have it on our Traffic signals. On the other hand.....Blue/violet make a weak color. You can just relate this to the VIBGYOR. See there...."V" - Violet a shade of Blue is goes on and ends with R - our RED.
