No individual was the last person hanged in the UK, as the last executions took place at the same time but at different prisons: Peter Anthony Allen at Liverpool prison and Gwynne Owen Evans (real name John Robson Walby) at Manchester Prison. Both were hanged on 13th August 1964.

(James Hanratty was hanged in 1962, and Ruth Ellis in 1955)

James Hanratty was the last person hanged in the UK. The last woman was Ruth Ellis. Both were hanged for murder, although there are serious questionmarks over Hanratty's conviction. From the programmes I have seen, and the books I have read on the case, it is highly suspect, and if I were a betting man I would have a little wager that he was/is innocent.

May he rest in peace (if innocent)

Ruth Ellis 1955, I thiink Albert Pieripoint was the executioner, there's a new film coming out about Pieripoint soon, so watch out for it, I think Stephen Fry is in it, or another local English actor.

It was those two guys - complete nonentities who murdered a milkman.
Of course there have been several private enterprise hangings since then, eg Lesley Whittle by Nielson the Black Panther. I think Fred West hanged himself too.
