Democracy is defined as rule by the people, which doesn't hold much weight in the U.S. except when it comes to voting. However, even then the lowly working class person doesn't have the same power as an upper class lobbyist, so it's far from being a perfect system.
I would say a better term for what government is existing now in the U.S. is an "oligarchy," which is rule by a select few (and I'm talking about .01% of the wealthiest of the country, and many of them are in Washington).

Myth... The USofA is a republic. The purest form of democracy can only be practiced in rural townships and small places. The future might see this differently... but a previous respondent also pointed to the oligarchy features we have through lobbys and big money features.

That depends on your definition of "democracy". "Pure democracy" means:
"A democracy in which the power to govern lies directly in the hands of the people rather than being exercised through their representatives."
But, if you look up the word "democracy", you'll see a slightly different definition:
"Government by the people, exercised either directly or through elected representatives."
So take your pick.
