I guess because your so use to yelling at an old person to get them to hear you, you know after they say huh for the 20th time. Some yell at the kids because if you try to say something to them in a nice tone it normally doesn't work. I have to yell at my daughter for her to get it lol and she laughs when I do it if I talk to her in a nice low tone she looks at me like I'm crazy ;)

Working in a nursing home I got in the habit of talking loudly because of those people that did have trouble hearing. I carried it over to my kids and family. They aree always telling me u don't have to talk so loud. It is a hrad habit to break. But it does come in handy when all the kids are talking at the same time, it gets thier attention. Good luck

For the same reason we talk louder to those who DO NOT speak our language.
Unable to communicate due to language, attention span, or experience WE TALK LOUDER as if that is going to help communication!
Maybe it is easier to yell than to try alternate methods of communicating... so selfishness? No time to re-think our approach to communication(see also Pres Bush foreign policies)?
I an sorry were you trying to say something?

Huh?
I guess for the same reason we saw it when we were in Korea. Most people think if you talk loud enough and slow enough anyone can understand English if they want to.

Children have short attention spans and we all assume older people can't hear, when, in reality, they don't WANT to hear us!

People tend to do this in an attempt to make sure that they have the other person's attention.
