You're referring to the Second Law of Thermodynamics...

Entropy is when energy is lost to heat.

Say you have a glass of cold water(system) in a room(surrounding) at 72F. Over time, the temperature of the water will become equal with the room. Therefore, the room has lost some entropy because some of its heat has been lost to the glass of water. Inversely, the glass of water has gained entropy.

An example is time. Time only goes forward. Say you broke a vase. The vase is broken, and you will never see it reform.

Would it grow? If the system is closed, it has no where to go or retreat to.
