I've changed the same light bulb twice this week and each time it was shattered. Then yesterday I went to start it and the battery was dead. I got a jump, it ran fine, but some of the electric controls were not working. Then as soon as I shut it off it was dead again. I thought the alternator was shot until i charged the battery overnight, and still nothing. I bought a new battery today, it started, and everything worked electronicly. Is it a short? Is it going to happen again? Is it something I could fix at home, or do i need a mechanic?

Sounds like you have a short somewhere. Take it to a mechanic to get it checked out.

I would say that there will be a short somewhere between your switch and the lights themselves, that system is not ran through the ignition switch thats why it will go dead and create a drain even without the car running, I would look at the connections at the back of the headlamp where it plugs into the light, then at the back of the switch.

Sounds like it may be OVERcharging. That will destroy the battery too, as you described.

Have charging system checked. The voltage regulator may be shot.

Shorts burn fuses and wires. You didn't mention any of that, so it's not a short.

Sounds like the internal voltage regulator in the alternator! For some reason you're getting surges. Might want to pull the alternator and have it tested for free at the local auto parts store.
Wouldn't wait to long if you value the ECM!!! Expensive little devil to replace and does NOT like varying voltage levels!!!!!!!!!!

I WOULD SUGGEST CHECKING ALL OF THE GROUNDING CABLES AND STRAPS
SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE BEEN OVERCHARGING ALSO
BEFORE YOU DESTROY THE BATTERY YOU JUST GOT HAVE THE SYSTEM CHECKED TO SEE THAT YOUR VOLTAGE REGULATOR IS NOT ALLOWING TOO MUCH CURRENT FROM THE ALTERNATOR
POWER SURGES AND COOKED BATTERIES ARE SOME RESULTS
YOUR SYSTEM COULD HAVE BEEN TRYING TO COMPENSATE FOR A FAULTY BATTERY AND CHARGING IT'S BRAINS OUT
MAY HAVE CURED IT BUT HAVE IT CHECKED
