When your child has dry diapers for several hours which shows they are able to control their eliminations. They usually are between 2 and 4. They will show a lot of interest in you going to the bathroom. Some kids have an easy time of it and even have it down by age 2 and others are almost 4. Some kids are just too busy and do not think about it. They just want to play but eventually they get embarrased about the whole diaper thing. Both of mine trained themselves before 2. Both asked to go or announced that they wanted to go potty. But one of mine by age 4 was sleeping very heavily at night and had a few mishaps. We went back to bedtime diapers and just did not make a big deal of it. By age 5 the sleeping habits and bodily functions were in sync and that was that. It isn't always that easy but you have to go with their maturity and readiness. Most of us are out of diapers by 4 and don't go back to them until we are much older! Don't stress just encourage. It will happen.

There is never a right time the child has to be ready, my 4 year old was fully potty trained when she was 1 1/2 and my son wasn't until almost 3 so it is up to them when they are ready.

previous answer pretty right on. different for different kids, although if by 3 there is no interest and perhaps a rejection of the whole idea then there is something psychological that is well out of the ordinary and should be checked with a professional
the use of heavy artillery as a persuasive measure to enforce the potty rules is not advised.

Your child will let you know when he/she is ready... you can always encourage as early as you want.. but the child will be most receptive when they are conscious of their need to be changed.. when they start telling you they need a change.. or that they went.. that'll be a good time to kick up the training a notch..

right, not really an age, more of when they seem ready.. can they take their pants on and off by themselves? wipe themselves? starting to stay dry at night or for longer periods of time? showing interest? etc..
