No you don't need a box spring. If you have a solid base on your bed. Such as a old waterbed frame. If you ever watch TLC's trading spaces you see lots of beds without a box spring.

You don't need to replace your box spring, if its still in fairly good condition and not cracked, despite what the salesman tells you. Its there to help support the mattress, and give it some stability. The mattresses that do not require a box spring generally have one built in, and the matterss is not flippable Just buy a new matterss the same size as your spring, and you will be fine.

some bed frames allready have what the box spring is intended for already built into the frames. the box spring was originally to balance in between those metal beams to support the floppy soft mattress and support your body more. Though over the years mattresses have had more and more spring put into them making them like a mattress and a box spring in one. Box springs are really for added support a spacer to get you higher up off the ground as well as give a bit more a spring.

I don't like the box springs cause they squeak I like to just use wood. We were full time RVers for 10 years and the best sleep I have ever gotten was on a foam mattress which laid on top of a sheet of plywood.

The box spring supports the mattress so it doesnt 'sag' as quick. You dont have to use one but you will need wooden slats or something for support...unless you were to put it directly on the floor.

Trish is right -- the box spring just helps prevent sagging.
