I was told that willow tree are stuff and next year it would come back do this sound right or possible?

It's hard to imagine taking off a branch--even a large branch would be the problem. What was the temperature and rainfall like since then. They don't like it too hot and they do like a lot of water. If either of these conditions existed they could be the cause.

Make sure where the branch was cut that there is no sign of disease or insect damage. Is it seeping sap where the branch was cut. If it is put Tree-Kote on it to slow down the flow until it heals. If the wood is good and solid that is probably not your problem.

I would say it's environmental and that the tree should bounce back in the spring. Many trees under stress will exhibit premature color change and leaf drop. The next year they're fine.

I heard that cutting any tree branches more than an inch in diameter will give a tremendous stress to the tree. It may grow a sucker or small shoots from the 'wound', but I don't think that a strong branch will grow back. This often happens when people cut back tree, I mean really cutting it and think it will grow back. You should consult an arborist in your area.
