If you meant by the economic growth or the educational standards, etc., there are some points to go over first.

1. the U.S. and other Western nations have been enjoying the prosperity over many years already. In other words, we lack the "hungry spirit". We have became comfortable, so now we work less harder than before.

But to China, it is a different story.

2. The educational standard of the American institutions have lower demend to the students than the Chinese (and even to the Europeans). We value more individual freedom than any other countries in the world. Our educational philosophy allow our kids to be enjoying more free time than the other nations'. It is because there is thinking behind that " the best education is what he or she learns by themselves with their own enthusiasm and experiences."

But to the Chinese, it is bit different. Their parents focus more on the "studying" style education and they have high expectations with high standards.

Also, it is the culture that strongly encourages the kids to grow highly intellectual in many respect. The term "nerds" or "geeks" do not mean anything interesting, because it is their belief that the people should be educated well.

But in our culture, focusing on the education too much often label him/her "nerd", pressing them into social isolation.

3. The Chinese have over 5000 years of history, with very high populations. Their land covers large areas of Asia. They have splendingly amazing culture. Their wisdoms come from the thousends of years of experiences with fierce competitions from their own ancestors.

There are many, many more to discuss.

But first, you need to specify your question; what do you mean by saying "lagging behind"?

Sounds like a trigger statement...without any qualification as to intent.

Your one poster appears to extol a fact that is not nor ever has been factual.. The last information I have been privy to suggests that all the money spent on education has had no beneficial effect.. I have never heard anyone send out anything suggesting our educational system was working well. In fact, just the opposite is being forwarded.. is why the administration has prodded the congress to do something about it.. like demand good schools, qualified teachers and accountability for showing improvement in the educational system.

We completely disregard the value of education. Instead we spend money on propaganda to tell everyone how great our educational system is - when in reality, no one is learning a damn thing.
