I went for my annual exam and I moved so I have a new gynecologist.

She examined me, and since she is a woman there was not a nurse present.

Anyway, she told me not to shave "down there" anymore.

I asked why.

She told me that shaving down there could spread bacteria and in her opinion, women who shaved were "trashy!"

WTF?

What should I do about this,

and is shaving really bad for you?

Yes it can cause bacteria to pread around. Also, it lets bacteria into the vagina easier, but she did have no right to tell you that. Not worth losing a good doctor over. She was just giving you her opinion. If it makes you feel better shave down there just to bug her.

I would drop that gynecologist as soon as possible.

She could have told you spreading bacteria is possible (which I don't believe for a minute), but to go into her own opinion when you didn't ask - unprofessional.

I have been trimming down there for years now - I can't handle the bush that grows, not only that, the more hair that is down there, the more odor it traps. When I'm trim, I feel cleaner when I wipe, cleaner when I shower, and some.

I don't shave completely just because of the discomfort I experience when it's growing back in and hair bumps that you have to care for.

Yea, dump her. Fast.

Yes...i thnk she was way out of line...she should never place her own opinion on things..she needs to just be professional..and should have just left if at the spreading of bacteria...and not say anything about it being trashy...but she is right...it could spread bacteria...b/c pubic hair is a barrier against bacteria...so with none there..you just have to be more careful and cleaner!..hope it helps!

she doesn't have the right to say its trashy cause that is beyond a medical oppinion. Yes you could be prone to more infections. Also the hair follicles can get infected. The hair does keep stuff from getting up into your vagina. I as a nurse have seen infected hair follicles get so infected that they had to be incised or cut into to get the green pus out gross. Its up to you if you want to shave. I would change doctors as she may have other opinions that you won't want to hear.

I think that doctors should always keep their personal opinions to themselves... yarrrr. If you told her boss what she said, you could probably get her fired for that... or at least you could be assigned to a new gynocologist.

And sometimes it is bad if you shave down there too much... I've heard that it can damage your nerves and if you shave with a used razor, it increases your chances of getting a bladder infection.

hi
ur gynecologist might have opined like that. but u may or may not shave if u like or dislike. it all depends on u only. infact shaving helps by preventing fungal infections like TENIA. if u dont like to shave atleaset that area must be dry. coz the wet hair down there can cause fungal infections and some times sweating may cause it. it s good habit to shave down there and it self tells the hygeine of the person. shaving will not spread bacteria and it will never harm u and infact it helps u

Hair is meant to keep bacteria and germs from entering the body, it serves as a filtering system. That is why the human body has hair at openings of the body. Shaving pubic hair is only for cosmetic reason and it has not benefits, but it does have some risk. As for her statement, that is her opinion and she is entitled to that, it is just free speech. Professionally I think she should have not said it, but it is her right. If you feel uncomfortable, just switch doctors.

I am with you WTF she had no right to say such as that. the spread of bacteria is one thing but her opinion of who is trashy was out of line. you went to see her for her medical advice not her personal one and i would make another appointment with her and tell her straight up that she was wrong for saying such and tell her that she needs to be more polite to her patients and if you had wanted her opinion you would have asked her for it, i would also make sure i had someone with me to witness what was being said just in case.

Find out who the regulatory body is who oversees gynecologists in your part of the world & make a complaint, don't even give her the curtousy of complaining directly to her practice. Commenting on your nether regions being shaven or unshaven is unprofessional...if she thinks women who shave are trashy WTF does she say to women who see her with genital warts etc?!?!
