so they can get from one place to another without trampling on everybody else.
Military discipline is a necessity, or everybody would be trying to make their own commands, even though they don't have all the facts.
Marching is one form of discipline that teaches team work, obedience, and self-control.
I'm sure there are plenty of other things that can be said, but I think it's all part of the discipline needed to maintain order in a regiment.

It's all about the discipline. Soldiers need to learn to take orders, work as a group, and function as a whole. It can also keep them in shape.

mainly to maintain a sense of uniformity and discipline...i guess if each soldier was marching to their own beat itd cause a major pandemonium....

The soldiers are trained to simply follow the orders because this conditions their mind to kill anybody whatever be the reason. If the soldier is ordered to kill, it simply has to follow orders whatever his heart may say that killing means destruction, craziness.
