if its in a straight line its the wheelbearing, if it bangs doing hard lefts or rights, its the CV joint or driveshaft coupling, and neither parts, will fail an mot unless they sieze or fall apart at the test. (which they dont) CV damage only shows up when its driven, and all wheelbearings have a degree of slop, which can be easily missed if at the test it was still ok, but just about to fail.

it could just be the mudflap catching something...and, daft question, how do you know its the wheel? could it be a fanbelt shredding behind the wheel, just open the bonnet and have a look.

My Punto made a noise like a very loud milk float or like a ghost sound. The sound started quite and got louder and louder whilst accelerating like a ghost train. Apparently it was the drive belt and Puntos are famous for it. I recorded the sound on my MP3 and took it to the garage. Maybe try that. I like Puntos overall.

I think....
sometimes a break pad wont throw off properly ( they sort of get spun away from the disc) when you move off until you get up to a good speed.
I don't know why it would make that particular noise but if the garage say it's safe don't worry.

Have you scuffed along the kerb? Maybe you need your wheels realigned or balanced.

you may have lost a weight on the inside of your rim...take it to a tire shop and have them look at it for a balance....if a weight is missing theyll put one on for you....shouldnt cost more than $20.00
