Ideally, a balance would be good. A place where you could feel another's pain and be objectve about it. However it's rare to find someone with that special ability. It can be cultivated to a degree, as doctors do it.

My advice is be yourself and feel your emotions. Then very deliberately lay them on the shelf and go on with life. This doesn't mean be callous or uncaring. Just learn to care for others and yourself both.

What we call "hurt feelings" is the pain of realizing that one's image of oneself is not supported or validated by another; the pain of realizing that I may have an unrealistic, vain or ignorant image of myself and that it might be obvious to others. It's the pain of feeling like a fool for not knowing myself as well as I need to and making myself susceptible to others who can see how lacking in self-knowledge I am

I'd say that it's just a front. That person who said that probably blocks their feelings or actually is very sensative and just pretends to be untouchable. Or if they actually are shallow enough and have been for long enough then maybe they are, and that's just SAD. =(

Don't change who you are. The last thing this country needs is one more shallow, unfeeling person. You just celebrate the emotional, feeling person that you are.
