I would like to buy a sewing machine for simple clothing construction - mostly skirts and dresses - and don't want to spend more than $100-$150. Can you recommend a basic model that is of good quality? I don't need fancy stitching, computerized embroidery, or any of that stuff.

I don't know the answer but you might try searching on Epinions. This is a consumer review Web site where people who own the product write reviews. The link is listed below.

I have a Brother's table top sewing machine which was around $100. I use it on all household sewing - repairs, alterations, clothes, pillows. Nothing fancy but it works okay.

Check out thrift stores and yard sale for a good deal or chech repair shops that deal with sewing machines. Most of the time they have used ones for sale.

I'd go to the fabric store and talk to the staff, usually ladies who are seamstresses. You could probably get several opinions that way from experienced seamstresses in one or two trips to different stores.

Buy one at Walmart, b/c it's inexpensive and they will stand behind the product if you're not happy.
