The term "Cat 5" or "Category 5" means that the cable conforms to the EIA/TIA standards for category 5 rating. Basically, the cable was constructed in such a way that it allows for at LEAST 100Mbps transmission.

Ethernet is a signal type or technology that is designed to interconnect computers together. Most computers access the Internet using computer PC cards that use Ethernet signal types and are designed to run at up to 100Mbps. For that reason, they usually use Category 5 cables (or more likely Cat5e nowadays).

All that means is that an Ethernet cable is an Ethernet cable, and they can be Cat3, Cat5, Cat5e, or Cat6 right now. XBox apparently needs at least the Cat5 rating on the Ethernet cable you use on it, but you can use a higher rating if you want. I think, though, that you won't see much difference and end up paying more money for nothing if you get a Cat6 cable...

Most ethernet cables (or network cables) are Cat5 or Cat5e. All Cat5 means is it handles more data transfer at a higher speed than Cat4, or Cat3 (regular phone cord). Pick you one up at Walmart, they have various lengths. Also, understand you must have a high speed internet connection (DSL or Cable) to connect your Xbox to the internet.

Cat5 designates the quality of the cable, while ethernet designates the configuration of the cable. So all ethernet cables should use a minimum of cat5 quality cable, but not all cat5 cables are used for ethernet.
