I live in Selangor but I travel a lot to Penang coz I used to study there...

It is not advisable for you to rent a motorbike or a car, if you are not familiar with the road... Since Penang is a small island, so most of the roads there are 1 way... You might easily lost your way or miss a juction... Besides, it is also dangerous if you are not quite familiar driving in the area...

Just take a taxi coz it is much easier... But make sure the taxi use the meter... Or you will be cheated by some fcuking stupid taxi drivers... & if you want to try something different, maybe you can ride a trishaw... Eventhough it is slower but it is much cheaper...

& please be aware of pick pockets & snatch thieves... They are everywhere...

The public bus system in Penang is a really cheap and efficient way to get to most places. Buses usually leave from the bottom level of the Kompleks Komptar in the middle of Georgetown. They are numbered and you can attain route information easily within Georgetown.

Motorcycling in Penang is far safer than in other regions of southeast Asia, but traffic can be heavy and there are a lot of one way streets.

It is really easy to get around Penang. The place is quite small. I wouldn't hire a motor bike unless you are really brave. Jump in a taxi or onto a ricksaw. Fantastic place and the people really friendly.

Penang is a small island. Not advisable to rent a bike unless you know the road. Just as when you travel anywherelse, take care of your belongings. Food and beach are great!

As someone who used to live - and drive - in Malaysia, I would say avoid the motorbikes at all costs. People drive like lunatics, and the country has one of the highest rates of road deaths for motorbike riders in the world. Taxis are only a few ringit - it will cost you pence - and it is soooo easy to get around. And there're always rikshaws if you want something more interesting!
