I worked as a freelance graphic designer while I was a stay-at-home dad for three years, and still do some freelance work on the side. It pays fairly well ($40-60/hr.), and there's very little overhead (just the cost of a computer and software, but it's all tax deductible). The downside of running your own home business is that you have to handle every aspect of the business yourself -- chasing down deadbeat customers who are late paying your bills, locating new customers in the first place, etc. You also need to get a bit of education and training first; and it helps (but isn't critical) if you've got a little raw artistic talent as well.
Good luck to you, and congratulations on choosing to stay at home to raise your children!

Please do yourself a good favor and take a look inside my profile. Go to my 360 page and then click on my blog. This has been a really good decision for me. I am also a stay at home mom and prefer to have the flexibility to benefit my family more than a boss.
The concept is centered around the total wellness of people. The physical, mental, and financial wellness that all of us deserve without the long hours and working 3 jobs that take time away from raising good children. You set your pace.
E-mail me or IM me with your questions.

Run a daycare. Its a lotta work and you have to be licensed by the state though.
Or you can sell stuff on EBay. Look around your hometown find something only available in your area, a local artist, or a local factory where you can buy direct. And turn around and sell those things on the Internet for profit.
I know a woman who discovered that floor mats for Ford Vehicles were made in her hometown. She would buy the floor mats straight from the factory at less than half what hte dealers charge, and then sold them on eBay for a profit.
