medium width.
the width of the foot.
not all shoes have those simplified width size examples.
some have B, as in a thin width foot to EEE which is a very thick width. i suppose medium would range from BB to CCC. and thicker widths range from D to EEEE.
it's strange just like the sizing of waistlines from mens to women's clothing... and men's shirt sizes and women's dresses.
not universal at all.

womans shoe sizes are smaller than a mans. for example a guy and girl would have the same size of foot but the guy would have a size larger than the girls. So i would go up a size for your boy, a try a size 11 in womens. I am sure it would fit great. Also what you can do is either take along a shoe of your sons with you and than just line it up with the ones you are looking at, you also could measure the outside of your sons shoe outside and than just take the measuring tape with you and find the size.

There's Narrow, Medium, and Wide; so I believe the M is for medium.

Much to my chagrin, I used to be a shoe salesman, and I can confirm that the M denotes medium width.
