Despite all the talk of varietals and generics, grapes and harvest, regions etc. the most important thing about tasting wine is WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT!

It is true that chardonnay is popular, but then there are wine drinkers who call themselves ABC's (Anything But Chardonnay). Champagne is sparkling and delicious, but only called champagne because it is produced in the champagne region of France. Most people couldn't tell the difference between champagne and considerably cheaper sparkling wines.

In truth, you will never answer the question you have asked. The best thing to do, is learn a little about wine tasting and maybe go to a wine tasting evening. Whichever you like the most, then that is the best white wine!

For what? Cooking? Drinking? Paired with fish? Poultry? Dessert? There is no best white wine, because it depends on how you're planning on drinking it. Fish and poultry dishes, particularly ones with lots of herbal additions or other flavors, do well with stronger whites like chardonnay or sauvignon blancs, particularly Californian and French ones. Semillons and pinot grigio/pinot gris wines are good for lighter dishes, and Australian ones seem to go particularly well with fruitier dishes or even drinking alone. If you forced me to pick a white wine for simply drinking by itself, I would have to go with a dry reisling, like the Chateau Ste. Michelle "Dr. Loosen" reisling, which is crisp, very slightly fruity and has a very complex finish. Dessert wines like muscat, sweet reislings and gewurtzraminers really are best with desserts, but often not with chocolate, since they are too sweet and can often overpower the sugars in the chocolate -- a sweet sparkling rose wine like the Banfi Bruschetto D'Acqui would be better there. Also, a nice sancerre is good with either a dessert or (traditionally) paired with a bit of pan-seared foie gras.

Typically, I'd steer away from boxed wines or ones that come in gallon jugs -- they're mass produced and aren't very good for much except maybe cooking with. Your best bet is to find a wine shop with a knowledgable staff who can steer you in the right direction. I'm lucky enough that my local QFC grocery store has the largest wine selection in the chain, and if I stand still in the wine section for more than about 1.5 seconds, the sommolier there pops out of nowhere and has three or four wine recommendations for just about anything I might be planning to serve, and so far, she's always been right on the mark.

That depends on two things, your particular taste or what you are having it with. Some wines are strong and dry while some are more subtle.I"m sure that the attendant at your local liquor store could give you some assistance in this matter.

I like Stony Cape Chenin Blanc (South African) or Marques de Caceres white Rioja. Don't know about the best though – possibly Meursault (Chardonnay)?

The question is far too wide: you can´t really compare Chardonnay, say, with Champagne.

I like Santa Margharita (I think) Pinio Gregio or however you spell it. Very nice, smooth, goes great with salmon.
