They mentioned maybe Gothic,but I'm clueless as to how to do their makeup or what they should wear.Also,I need ideas that would win "funniest" for a couple.

Gothic is simple. all black clothes, doesn't matter the theme of the t-shirt. (there are even black christian t-shirt and Gothic dressed christian kids) also put chains on the belt loops, make up is eye liner, mascara like a woman would wear, black lip stick and nail polish, hair can be any color, many wear black hair or deep red or even silvery blackish blue,like a hot rod car.
you could go as Lucy and Desi , or 2 clowns and show up doing funny stuff from the beginning, 2 mime's that mimic each other.

For funniest couple, pick a popular couple, but have the boy dress like the girl and the girl dress like the boy.
For your Gothic kids: make their faces pale with powder, don't use clown white make up. Outline their eyes with black eye shadow, tops and bottom. Black lipstick, and black nails.

For the boys, go shop online it's hassle free!
Check out the the "Death Rider" boy http://www.costumzee.com/tag/death+rider/ and the "Demon Rider" http://www.costumzee.com/tag/demon+rider/ (in child sizes), that would make a great team!
There are also pretty cool Zombie costumes which the boys might like...
As for a funny couple costume, you could be a "white trash" couple ;-)...Grandpa and GrandMa....

Maybe you could try dressing them as vikins,then the only make-up you would need is some ashes or dirt.

pirates go to thrift store pick up a vest draws skill all over.and have the boys go from there.
