without becoming the bully? You don't. What you do is stand your ground and let them know you will not be intimidated.
I think back in my parents day you could stand up to a bully and they would probably leave you alone. Kids are different now, they are dissensitized. There are too many stories of kids getting jumped just for standing up for themselves. If you beat a bully once, it is more likely that they will take it a step higher in retaliation. If they are really bothering you though, I would recommend alerting an authority figure and seeking some counseling. Too many kids have hurt themselves looking for a way out.

A bully is trying to exert psychological control over you. You beat a bully by letting a bully win. Make it easier for the bully to do what he/she is trying to do. If the bully comes to you and threatens to hit you, take your fist and hit your own face in front of him/her.
When the bully realises that threats and actions will not have the desired effect the bully will be beaten. Some bullies are really stupid though, and they just keep on bullying in the misguided belief that by getting their own way they are winning.
A bully does not win, the winner is the person who lets the bully win. The bully then realises that the prize for winning is being labelled a loser!

If it's at school, just stay in a group with your friends. The bully is much less likely to try to hurt you or make fun of you like that. Safety in numbers! Also, you might need to tell a teacher or other trusted adult. They can help stop the bullying problem.

Bullies are not always cowards. This is a myth.
You have to assess how strong they are, and if they can be beaten.
If they can be beaten, then you must choose when to attack them. Timing is everything. You can use any weapons you like. You can get someone to help yo if you like too.
If you can get them when they are sleeping then well and good. Make sure you hurt them badly, and don´t apologise for your surprise attack.
If they are too strong, or clever or both, then you will have to ask an authority to assist you: a police officer, a family member, a teacher.
Good luck.
All´s fair in love and war!

Tough one. Bullies are pathetic, sad, badly adjusted, cowardly, mean, and don't deserve to be a part of society.
Their effects can be devastating to those affected.
So, without knowing more, it is difficult to say for sure. But always remember, YOU ARE BETTER THAN THEY ARE! Don't believe what they say about you. If they are physically harming you, report them to the police. Take self defence classes. Make lots of friends who will give you emotional support.
Talk to friends and family and ask for their advice. You could try avoiding them - but why should you alter your daily life in this way?
Be strong. Remember you are worth 10 of them.
Good luck.

Get right up in his face, shove him, scream nasty names at him and dare him to do something about it. Tell him you are going to make whistles out of his ribs. If he backs up, go right along with him. Keep your face only a few inches from him. Keep yelling.
But make sure you have backup and he doesn't.
Something funny happened when I was in 5th grade. The local bully stopped me by holding onto the handlebars of my bike.
Since he had his hands occupied, it was easy for me to punch him in the face.
