Because they taste good. Carrots have a higher percentage of natural sugars in them than grass, and so taste sweeter and have a pleasant crunch to them that grass and alfalfa hay simply can't provide. Same goes with apples. If she had her druthers, my horse would eat carrots until she turned bright orange, but I dare say it'd be too rich a diet for her and she'd founder if I let it go that far... better to keep carrots and apples as a treat rather than a dietary staple.

Because if fed whole suicidal horses can sometimes choke on them. Since horses can't vomit the depressed ones grab at all the whole carrots they can. So always cut them in stips because the depression can always lift with time. Then they will be glad you kept them safe & alive.

I don't know, but horses are fascinating animals. Wish I could afford a horse-friendly lifestyle for my kids. Horses are herbivores, so maybe it's natural for them to eat apples and carrots.

Actually, none of my 17 horses will eat a carrot. Only about half of them will eat an apple, and only 4 of them will eat a pear. ALL of them however LOVE wheat thin crackers!!

because they are full of suger and are nice and juicy! also most people will know that horses will eat just about anything! lol. in a recent survey it was found that the number one choice for horses was cherry, followed by bannana (although my mare hates them, she spat it across the field and it hit another pony in the head!) and pears! the least liked flavours were garlic and ginger. if you are going to feed a horse cherries, make sure you take out the stones!

Is "Why do monkeys like bananas your next question?" LOL
I have never met a horse that didn't like carrots although I did have one that DID NOT like apples.

My horses HATE carrots and apples, but love soda and beer!! Pizza crust and watermelon rinds, too.

And yes, I know I shouldn't feed my horses soda, beer and pizza crust.
