I've just done an experiment with a Canon 2200 using 'High Capacity' cartridges and managed to print 389 sides of A4 paper full of black text and some with small colour jpegs. The cost per sheet of paper printed both sides has cost me 19p in ink. 19p per A4 sheet! Is this ink WORTH that much?!!!

Just run a test printing exactly the same pages on a full HD black cartridge in an Epson C86 and the black ink ran out after 306 pages while the individual colour cartridges showed half full. Replacing the cartridges with whole black and half colour gives me 18.2p per sheet. Still a rip off!

They often give a printer with a new computer because they know they will refind it fast...

We have always filled the cartriges up ourselves with a generic ink. However, this is only good for about 6 refils, when you have to replace the cartriges.
So off we went to to buy new cartriges
IT WAS CHEAPER TO BUY A NEW PRINTER!!! (which came with two new cartriges - thereby proving that ink is not worth that much)
We are undoubtedly being ripped off. What's more, at a time when we are supposed to be saving the environment we are being forced to participate in a disposable society. If you have any ideas how we can change this, let me know.
All the best

How much time would elapse during regular use to consume 389 printouts?
In my house that could be 6 months so 2 cartridges a year wouldn't be extreme. If you want to run high volume, you should check consumerreports.com to see which printer has the lowest price-per-sheet cost.

It's the age old "Gillette" marketing plan. Give away the razor and charge them through the nose for the blades to use it.
Cheaper the printer, the more the cost per page to use it in ink. Smartest way to pick a printer is by its supplies and the cost verses yield.

Im an absolute novice with regards to Comps. & Printers but recently bought a Re-fill kit at TESCO`s for I think £10.and found the whole process quite painless. I suppose it might depend on quality but I cetainly cant see any difference with the end result. Good luck.

I go to Ink Xpress and swap my empty cartridge for a full one. These ones last much longer than the originals.

Printer ink is expensive, but shop around, I have an Epson D88 the ink vary's CURRY'S sell it for £19.99, for pack of four, ASDA sell it for £34.95 (Rip off there). but it all depends on what you want to use the printer for. Quality printing or just home printing.

May be.
If you don't like Cannon, try something else.
If you need to print a bunch of stuffs with lower cost, you should get a laser printer, which can print stuff faster and save you a lot of money on inkjets. it will be a liitle expensive to get the laser printer..
