Better for whom -- the school, the employer or the student?

If you get an MBA from something other than a top school, there won't be much improvement in your salary whether you do it with or without experience.

If you can get an MBA from a top school without work experience, then you will be better off -- because your first job will probably pay in the six figures. But your employer will not be as well off.

The only problem with this plan is that the top schools don't accept very many people without work experience. Based on my experience, I'd guess that less than one percent of the students in top MBA programs have no work experience. The average is four years.

The answer is it depends.

First of all, what type of school do you want to go to to get your MBA. Top MBA schools REQUIRE experience before admitting someone into the program at least strongly recommend it.

Second, do you want to pay for it? Most large companies will at least help with tuition costs if not pay for the whole thing so long as you get a grade of B or better (more likely to get B's in grad school)

Third, How much time do you want to spend getting it? If you want to get it in 2 years or less than I would go straight for the MBA, once you start working it's very difficult to make that transition back to school full time and besided you usually get used to the larger salary. If you don't mind going part time I would definitely go for work experience first.

Lastly, if you decide to get your MBA after you get a job and while holding a job, you will most likely need to leave the company that put you through school to realize your true market earning potential (ie, quit after you finish and get a job that pays you roughly 1.2 to 1.5 times more than you made before you got your MBA).

Good luck.

Both. Doing job while doing an MBA course helps in the long run; as then you have the experience and the degree to back you up.

Many companies will pay for part or all of your MBA degree if you have worked for them for a while.

Unfortunatly, it's a mixed issue. Some companies will go for the fresh out of college MBA more than the older MBA.

Many MBA programs require that you have one or two years out of college before entering.

I would suggest experience is a good thing to have.

Get some work experience first. Otherwise the course material will be purely theoretical. Besides, possibly your employer will pay some of your expenses for a part-time MBA degree.

After, I'm starting mine and you learn much more in your first year of work than you did in all 4 years of college. Plus, your job might flip part of the bill for you, which is sweet!
