I answered the question earlier Why do people think babies are public property? And it got me wondering, those of you who don't like people touching your children, what do you do when someone does?

Ann D, I do the same thing. I wear my son in a sling as much as I can, especially in walmart or other big stores because people aren't as quick to touch him, if they have to practically grab my boob to get to him :D

If it's my baby and its very young I wear my baby, Baby slings or carriers. People are less likely to touch your baby if it's strapped to your body.

it depends on the person, If it is an elderly "grandmotherly type" I would just smile and beam with pride. If it were a young person especially male, my guard would go up, as long as he didn't bend down close to my baby I wouldn't say anything, but at the point they are bending down towards my child " child in a stroller" that puts them between you and your child and would make it fairly easy for him to remove the child as he stands up then he could take off running! The same would apply to a young female getting a little too close for comfort. And in todays world with all the new germs and desease that can be transmitted person to person. It is best to hurt someones feelings rather than have your child sick or harmed. I love babies and when I see a new baby it is so tempting to ask to hold it. But out of consideration and respect for the parent and child I don't do that unless I know them. It is a proven fact that there is fecal matter literally EVERYWHERE. Public restrooms, the ATM machine. Even though your home is clean, all people go to the bathroom, not all people properly wash their hands before they leave the restroom. Simply holding your hands under running water does not kill germs!Never allow anyone, even a family member to put their hands near your baby's mouth. I carried baby wipes in the stroller and if someone held my babies hand"a lot of older women will do that" when they went along their way I would wipe my baby's hands, because no doubt the baby's fingers go straight to it's mouth. and most elderly people don't remember to wash their hands! As a parent it is your responsibility to keep your child safe. If someones feelings get hurt or a stranger at the store is offended by your request not to touch. TOUGH.

Babys are cute and most people love them kind of like dogs. Just like a stranger touching a pregnant belly. I would shake there hand and let them know your teaching your child not to get to friendly with strangers after all its your child. if there small just move the stroller and say that you baby is very sensitive but at some point you will have to get over it. Unless the attention seem odd/dangerous

Hi
Well my baby is now 12...but When she was a baby everyone one acted like she was on display when we went out...
DROVE ME MAD!
I used t o cover her stroller with a blanket to keep people from stuffing thier faces in and breathing on her! I did the sling too but foudn it hard ot shop without worrying over banging her into things!
One time... even I was in the check out lane at the market and I turned around to find this guy rubbing my daughters socked feet...
He was an odd lookin guy too...
I flipped out.. I am usually composed but I freaked... I actually yelled at him and said Who the hell do yout hink you are ... oh I really flipped... he said its ok Im am massage therapist... as if THAT made it all ok....
I told him I dont care who you are you dont touch other people children!!!
From that moment on.. I was forver outspoken... I had no iddues plainly telling folks nicely .. please dont touch my child.
Frankly any adults who dont understand that are either not parents or folks I dont want around my child.
As a parent I do not get up on others babies... I do sneak a peek when a cart with a carrier goes by ... I do admit... but I dont approach it... just look from where I was.... and smile...
People who dont have kids dont seem to realize that if you are a mom out to shop you are not wantin the extrra attention they are giving....
I found just nicely saying ..Please dont touch my child, or something similar or you can use the stranger thing... we are teacher her about strangers please dont talk to her or soemthing similar..... all work
You will offend some no doubt... and you may even get some who ignore you and you have to get ugly...
You cant account for every ding bat... but good luck on all of it!

I am preg. with my second child with my first I glared at people, or said I do NOT want my child to think strangers are safe. Respect MY space, lol I also practically growled at a few people I DO NOT KNOW WHERE YOUR FILTHY HANDS HAVE BEEN DO NOT TOUCH MY BABY! I was rude, I know however, when I see children that are friendly to strangers and such I get scared. With my second child I plan to do much the same. I want my children to be weary of strangers, besides you NEVER know what people have and can give to your little one.

I shoot them a look and ask them to please not handle my child. It may seem mean, but they're the one's being idiots. I would never touch a stranger's child without asking if it would be okay. I did this even before I had my own child. It's rude. This also leads into why people think a pregnant belly is public property and why do people have to tell you pregnancy horror stories?

It depends on the person. We usually say the baby is asleep and cover her up and then they just kinda go away but nice people we let touch her feet only. You know because she puts her hands in her mouth and I dont want her getting any kind of stranger germs.

enjoy it. They are not going to be a baby very long and when its a kid people just dont give a darn anymore. be glad you have a cute baby everybody wants to play with. I had a hard time at first too but now I really enjoy all the attention she gets. Also, I think that has to be good for thier social skills.

This drives me nuts. We tell our kids not to talk to strangers and to stay away from strangers yet if your kid ignores this person then theyre 'rude' and you get the stinkeye from them.
I simply state "Im sorry, we dont talk to strangers." Surprisingly, 99% of people understand what and why Im saying it (to teach the kids a lesson).
I had a huge problem with people talking to my twins. As if twins are so rare or something? Even so far as 1 crazy woman trying to pick up one of the infants out of my stroller... saying 'i just had to hold her!'.
Im not overflowing with patience for idiots so I told her to keep her hands to herself and get a clue!
