I thought I had planted acorn but they are yellow like dumpling squash.

The attached link suggests looking for a color change such as an orange spot on green acorn squash.

I would also check to see if the stem is drying out or if the outer skin is tough enough that your fingernail won't dent it. The later is important if you intend to store the squash for any length of time.

Apple filled Acorn Squash 3 acorn squash 2 apples, chopped a million/2 cup walnuts, chopped a million tablespoon orange rind, grated a million/2 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons margarine, melted # combine all factors different than for squash. # Preheat oven to 350 deg F. # cut back squash in 0.5 lengthwise and scrape out seeds. # place cut back area down in baking dish and bake for 25 minutes. # combination the different factors. # turn squash cut back area up, fill with apple combination and proceed baking for 20 minutes, or till squash is mushy.
