It is hard to answer when you're not specific enough about what e-mail service you use. Each of them handle this differently. Yahoo and Gmail have pretty good spam filters. Hotmail's is crap. The best I found was fastmail, where you can bounce e-mails back, after a while they'll think your address doesn't exist and delete you from their spamlist.
Also, never post your e-mail address on forums, etc., because spambt collect them. If you have to post it, camouflage it like john(a)yahoo.com or peter_at_msn.com. People will understand it but spambots won't.
Oh, and DON'T reply "unsubscribe" to them. That will just confirm your address exists and can be spammed. The poster who said it works probably received not "real" spam from professional spammers, just some well-intentioned ads from a website.

I too was getting about 50 junk mails per day.
I took the time to open them and "unsubscribe" to all of them.
It didn't really take that long, you could do 10 per day until they all stop.
I now only get 1-2 per day.
Good Luck

Never enter your regular e-mail address on the Internet...Get another address with Yahoo, who will catch the spam mail and put it in a separate folder...The only thing you can do now that your e-mail address is already on the Internet, is change your regular e-mail address and then follow my advice...
