You said "side of the road"? For that you may/will need to get a temporary vendor/peddlers license and or permit from the County Office. It varies from County to County, what they will and will not allow.

But what you should do is....

Locate a spot that has a business on it. Say......Wal Mart, Target, Kroger or some place like that. It is private property so the Company itself can give you permission to RAISE Money, and be sure to word it like that. The Girl Scouts, Salvation Army and The American Red Cross, the local Fire Departments collect money for "Give Burns the Boot" at Wal Mart all the time.

Charitable organizations and Youth groups are usually welcomed to raise money for their cause and/or group.

You do have to contact their corporate office and not just the store manager though.

On smaller business properties the owner can usually be found on the premises or a phone call away. They will usually give permission for such things due to the cause. You may find that many business' have joined this cause due to a September 2005 proposal that retailers get involved on a National level. So do some research in the location you are planning to have your sale. You may find a supporter that will allow you to sell for free!

Good luck to you.
