How can I find the history on my house? Can I get this info for free?

I know it's an older house. The people we bought it from said it was haunted. I'm not superstitious, but I am curious.

Go to the town hall and find out who owned it before, you could ask them. Also you could google your address and see if there are any reports or maybe something entertaining in an old newspaper at your local library. Have fun.
