a while back i was on the internet when my cd drive popped open. it was a laptop where the cd drive was on the side, so i assumed i had accidentally hit it with my hand. then i recieved a pop-up saying "If your CD Drive just opened, you have spyware! Purchase our anti-spyware program for $29.99!" of course i figured that the salesmen were also the perps, and did not purchase the spyware protection but disconnected and ran a full system scan with Norton.

my question is, just how bad was my security compromised, and should i be worried about any lasting consequences?

The seriousness of the spyware depends on which of the several thousand it is. Usually the most serious ones are the ones that show the least effect on your PC.

Run both Ad-aware Peronal Edition ( http://www.lavasoftusa.com ) and Skybot (http://www.safer-networking.org/) to remove any spyware. Run both as one may caught something the other missing. Then go to microsoft.com and download Defender to protect against future infections.

Norton does a good job on viruses, but depending on the version can be weak on spyware. Running the other two will either clean the PC or assure you that Norton is doing a good job.

Oh, and it is possible to pop the CD drive up from a web site with an activex script without actually install any kind of a spyware on your PC. So that is another possibility. (Anything to con you out of your money)

Three things to say on this:
1. Norton is crap, find and install AVG Free (anti virus from grisoft).
2. Find and install Spybot Search and Destroy.
3. Find and install Adaware.

They are all freeware, trustworthy and dependable.
