I just bought a TI 89 calculator and wondering if it will be the same as a TI 84. I never use a graphing calculator before so I thought that spending more money on a calculator would get me more features; however, most of the people that I talk to use a TI 84.

Some even say that college exams will not let me use a TI 89.

What is the different? Should I sell my TI 89 and buy a TI 84 instead. I'm planning to use it for college.

Definitely don't do that!!! A TI 84 is best for high school level algebra and things like that, while a TI 89 is suitable for college level math. A TI 89 has got more functions and more memory. It's allowed on SAT & AP tests, just not ACT tests... It's also got a Computer Algebra System (CAS), which is really useful...
Here, I'll give you the official comparison chart by the manufacturer, Texas Instruments: http://education.ti.com/educationportal/sites/US/nonProductSingle/graphing_course_comparision.html .
Hope I've helped! =)

TI 89 is more advanced, has more features and is able to do a lot more stuff than the 84. It's like comparing a computer from today to that of a computer 5 years ago.

To be honest, that would all depend on what you are wanting to do. If you are just wanting the graphing calculator to use for math and science, go with the 84. If you are wanting to use it for engineering and other advanced programs, go with the 89.

The TI 89 is a fantastic calculator. I've had mine since October of 1998, shortly after it came out. I was a senior in high school at the time. I used it all throughout college as I studied to become a mechanical engineer, and I continue to use it on a daily basis as a professional. It is superior to the TI 84, given its ability to perform symbolic manipulations in addition to fractions, trigonometry, calculus, probability functions, and a host of extremely complicated and sophisticated operations. However, it is true that some exams don't allow you to use it. I'd suggest finding the websites for the standardized tests you expect to take, and reading the rules to determine if you'll be able to use the TI 89 for them.

Depending on what degree you're pursuing, you shouldn't need the TI 89 at all. Unless you're a math major senior year or something like that. The TI 84 is excellent, especially if you're just taking math as a required course (Algebra I & II, etc.) In the website below you'll find the comparison side by side.
However i would't sell it, since you already have i would keep it, you'll see that it does a lot of functions (stats and probabilities, geometry, calc, etc).
Good luck :)

They are not the same. I don't know the specifics, but TI-89s do a lot more of the algebra, intermediate steps, simplifying and solving than TI-84s do. That is why many instructors/teachers do not allow them and exams don't either.

They are both similar, however figuring out how to use the functions on a TI89 are much harder in my opinion

Keep the 89-it will prove to be a better buy if you ever take a class in statistics and or calculus 1+2

The ti 89 is far superior to any other TI calculator that does not have a keyboard(ti-92)
