T-Mobile currently offer the cheapest pay as you go tariff overall. Check their website and you'll see. I suggest you also consider what networks your friends and family are on as being on the same network will mean cheaper calls.

Cingular. I had a Nokia tracfone that rounded the minutes off...like one minute was counted as two!! So, I went with my parents' plan, and it was only $10 more expensive.

Here's the website, take a look at their free phone planes online:

Mine's the black one that says $10 next to it (3x zoom or something...its an LG 2000 series)

Of course, if you're a light user, you could try Tracfone. You never pay except for the prepaid phone cards, which are $20 each. But wook! do those minutes go fast! You only get an hour per card.

Hope it helps!

Read the fine print. I had a pre-paid phone for my wife for a while. Then we noticed this little "daily access fee." A lot of pre-paid providers will charge a dollar each day you use the phone (in addition to any per minute usage charges). If you use the phone once a day (even just a 30 second call ), then you've got $30.00 on top of whatever you're actually using. At that point it's cheaper to be on a plan.

Stelios (the guy who set up EasyJet & EasyCruise) now has a mobile phone company called EasyMobile.

Rates are 5p/text to any network & 15p/min to any landline/mobile network. Even lower rates are available on the same network (he rents network space from T-Mobile). He also has some great rates for buying phones with airtime.
