In as much as I was not around to see how everything came into being (and neither were you),I say, "I don't know ..... YET!" To assume that some god, my less than intellectual ancestors made up, instantaneously farted the universe into being, is absurd

Talking about the Big Bang, one must realise that there are other theories. Consider the fact that the universe may not be expanding but rushing in on itself.
Your question states' How did the Big Bang happen when there was nothing there in the First place?' Consider the fact that space is a vast void, where anything is possible.
Recently discovered dark matter, or dark energy, weaves and intertwines, and connects to all that is that we can see.
Our knowledge regarding this matter is in it's infancy, and through our novice science, dark energy can exhibit enormous power.

So I guess the answer to your question is that the universe that we know was created through this dark energy. Looking at the vastness of space, cosmology and astrophysics it is wise to assume there were a series of 'smaller bangs' as opposed to the Big Bang theory. It will be many many years, if not thousands, before we can fully understand the universe, dark matter (or dark energy) and your question will probably be answered in it's entirety at that time.

I hope you have fun in finding the answer that suits your needs.

According to theoretical quantum science what we percieve as 'Real' is but an illusion created by the electro-magnetic fields of the atomic structure. At the atomic level and quantum there really are no physical objects but rather electro-magnetic waves that give properties of particles when observed. Consider that the 5 human senses only relay electrical information from the external world to our brains.
