I am writing a paper and I used the phrase "My bad habit of doing this paid off on this day" and my teacher wrote "word choice' above "paid off" any suggestions on what else i can use?

I'm not sure why your teacher wrote that, but my suggestion, if you need to change the wording would be "My bad habit of doing this came in very handy on this day." Hope this helps.

I would probably use a different phrase in combination with explaining how the bad habit helped you, for example, "My bad habit helped me avoid X", or "saved me from X", or "prevented X", or "allowed me to X", or "helped me to X", etc.

paid off is a positive, only good things pay off. bad things or bad habits do not. so if u are talking about your bad habit, you say ' i got rid of my bad habit on this day' or 'my bad habit got corrected' or such things. Paid off means that you got benefitted in some way because of your bad habit

How about re-writing the entire sentence? Something like: "I ,quite unexpectedly, benefited from my bad habit of doing this." What do you think?

My bad habit acted in my favor on this day.
On this day, my bad habit turned out to be a good habit.
I learned that my bad habit was not such a bad habit, after all.

My bad habit is curiousity. Are you to tell us what yours is?

Try this: My bad habit of doing this resulted in whatever on this day.

proved itself useful...sounds like you're saying the bad habit turned out to be a good thing, right?

My bad habit came to great use....................the quote "paid off" sounds unprofessional and slang.....Also, I am curious, is your sentence starting off with the word "My?"......The whole sentence probably could use some restructuring. Good Luck PS. Please be wary of Jammy's advice, he needs to recheck the use of the word "got"..........yikes!!!
