I just looked at both the Oyster and Hood web pages, for I thought you were implying they come with a furling system that reacts on its own to changes in windspeed.....this is an idea that has been kicked around sailors bars for 35 years at least and I thought someone had finally come up with it. Alas, no.

If there is such a system, I'd LOVE to know about it!

You still have to be awake to furl the headsails or main.....pull the reefing line or hit the button for an hydraulic system as far as I can see..

and as far as rest while the autopilot drives the boat? Single and double handers do it all the time, despite the risks of drifting containers, small boats that don't show up on radar, etc etc etc......and the legal requirement that someone be awake and on watch all the time a boat is underway.........auto pilots allow you to grab ( at some risk) cat naps while doing passages, but not to drive the boat unattended for any length of time. You hit something or someone while dozing off and insurance is void and you are in a world of trouble

I'm sorry but yankee sa is very correct in his answer. Even with an proximity warning alarm on a radar there is a lot of nasty things that can happen. The worst being the ever changing weather if a squall blows up while your a sleep your boat could easily be knocked down if she's got too much sail on. Before you know it your swimming instead of sailing. If you need a crew man say the word and I'll be glad to sail with you if I can get to you without it costing a fortune.

Most ocean sailors take very shory multiple naps 24 hours a day. When we sail at autopilot we still stand watch, as do all of the sailing couples that we know. On delivering boats with a captain we stand 3 hour watches 24 hours a day. One time when a captain friend did not get good crew he stayed awake for a week.
