A miscarriage or correctly called a spontaneous abortion is when a pregnancy is spontaneously terminated before 13 weeks. You can have cramping and bleeding or slight bleeding, it can be very rapid or it can take 3 to 4 weeks to be complete. The uterus expels the "products of conception" as it is termed. A D & C is NOT always necessary if everything has been expelled. Meantime a miscarriage is NOT I repeat NOT an ememrgency and does not require emergency treatment unless the mother is hemmorhaging which is unusual. There is nothing your doctor can do to prevent a miscarriage. Primary treatment is to assure that nothing is left behind. Usually a mother will know that she is pregnant although many miscarriages occur before she is sure. Blood tests will reveal the level of hormones that are required to maintain the pregnancy and this will help indicate a miscarriage. Ultrasound can also be helpful.

You start bleeding and cramping just like a period or worse sometimes. You know it's a miscarriage when you go to the doctor and they confirm you are/were pregnant and are miscarrying. They do a D & C to make sure no tissue is left so you won't get an infection.

Excessive cramping, bleeding. If you or someone you know might be having one, get to a dr. right away!! I had two, and it is terrible!!
