An over the counter cold remedy with guaifenisen (sp?) is usually pretty effective for a cough. If this doesn't work call the doctor's office & ask for prescription or ask pharmacist for recommendation.

No matter what you try, do not go for any OTC drugs. Go see a doctor and tell the doctor of what you're probably allergic to. Prolonged coughing may show that you need a chest x-ray to be done. Check out if you're having productive cough, the colour of your phlegm, duration of the running nose and also symptoms of headaches. This may show you're suffering from respiratory tract infections which you need to go see a doctor to get the first hand antibiotics. No exposure to known allergen, keep yourself warm and out from aggravating known factors to cause coughing and such. Drink a lot of water and keep yourself hydrated. Do not try being a next-door smarty pant to get an OTC drug, they are always dangerous. Hope this helps.

The other answers are good, but Theraflu is another good OTC. Careful with the coughing. If its that bad check with your doc for a recommended expectorant.
