a jock strap is the piece of clothing that holds the plastic cup in place that is used to protect the genitals. it is primarily used for men, but in some cases women may opt to wear one also (as happens in some forms of martial arts).

The jock strap does not protect the male genitals as it is no more than a pair of underpants which are cut very briefly. Therefore if one get a bang in that area it still hurts a great deal. Like a ladies bra, if a lady gets a bang on the breasts it hurts.
What the jock strap does is to hold the testicles firmly so that there is no excessive movement when running or dodging about as one would when playing football,basketball,tennis etc. Excessive "swinging about" would hurt and cause a strain to the system in that area.
Once again just like a ladies bra.
Usually in a JS there is a pouch into which a rigid "box" is placed for those that play cricket or other hard ball games where ball is likely to come into contact with the genitals.

haha.. similar to a cup, it protects the male genitalia in sports such as baseball. The jock strap is like protective underwear.
