The darker wood will show the tiny scratches their nails might make in the finish. Not to mention the hair. I installed Pre-Finished Brazilian Cherry (3/4" - 3"wide) It is absolutely beautiful. Bought it on line from HoskingHardwood.com. I Believe it was $3.90 sq/ft
While I do love the color of the floor, it is more work to keep it looking clean that a lighter wood would be. However i still wouldn't change it. I bought the stair nose pieces and they look and work great. Would be happy to share photos or more info if wanted. email me at mattpl@yahoo. I installed it myself & wish I would have known at the start of the project what I knew when i was done.
Good luck

I have two German Shepherd Dogs (and I frequently doggiesit for two others) and we decided on prefinished White Oak because it's super hard and the color was gorgeous.
But if you like a darker wood the Teak is probably the better of the two, because it is less porous than Cherry and with muddy paws, sloppy water bowls and the possiblity of accidents with dogs, you don't want any liquids or odors soaking into your floor.

those woods are great, the harder the better really. all exotic hardwoods are much harder than our standard hardwoods(oak, maple) A good one as well is bamboo, its a little cheaper but still very attractive. As for your dogs..the wood may still dent(wood will dent usually before scratching) you cant really get around it. but any wood with a aluminum oxide finish will hold up much better than your urethane finish. I know companies like Goodfellow,Bruce hardwoods,Mercier mostly use aluminum oxide, thus giving you a longer warranty as well. usually 25yrs on finish lifetime on structure. One thing you didn't mention but is often asked is under-floor heating. this is a no go for hardwoods as it will dry it out and cause gaps in the seams.

Have you thought about the new environmentally friendly Bamboo flooring? I know it is technically not "wood" - but they are very cost effective and come in a variety of colors etc. They are actually harder and more durable than wood. We have oak ( and dogs) in our house and my daughter's bamboo floors have held up better than the oak. Just a thought. ( She got hers for around $1.75 a square foot.)

if you have dog's do not any cheaper on wood floor's because when it comes to wood floor's you get what you pay for and if you get one for $6.00 a square ft the dog will still scratch that floor just from walking across it laminate is the best way to go

What have the beagles got to do with laying a floor? Are they going to lay it for you?
