To the person above Noriad was an American charity supported by a number of prominent Americans especially Irish who channeled funds to IRA and buying weapons
the Irish terror was in a far of place where not many had been but the 9/11 attack was on New York where a lot more had been.
Supporting the Irish was a romantic notion of supporting the mother land against the evil oppressor (watch Braveheart or The Patriot and see how movies paint the English as the baddies) but without realizing the consequences in terms of death and heartache.
Noraid was painted as a legitimate charity who would not hurt a fly. Imagine giving money to help Muslims in need and finding the money ended up in a terrorist organisation.
PS Don't come on here and say that this did not happen because it did and is America's secret shame. Check your facts at the references below before you comment. or is ignorance bliss
To Oldman I don't suppose you met all 250 million Americans. Yes it was a UK conflict but how many Americans claim some Irish heritage.
In the end it was Clinton amongst others who did stop it and a lot of that was reduced funding due to the banning of Noraid. This was not the only reason
Interesting all the long ideas are getting negative votes but all those who are slagging people off and ignoring the facts get positive views.

I don't think that the support of the IRA was state supported I believe that the support came from organizations within the states. Groups who claimed to be raising money to help the Irish people. They did not divulge that the people they were helping were the Irish terrorists. I did not contribute to any of these groups and know no one who did. I also do not contribute to any group that I know is giving money to terrorists today but I have contributed money for humanitarian aide to Iraq. Could I be fooled by these groups sure but I hope not.

Why would the British insist on ruling a completely different Nation?
Irish and British are different. Why would you insist on holding onto part of the country? When it was never yours to begin with.
The separation of Ireland by the British was the reason behind it.
The American Revolution was about not being second class citizens, the same with the Irish Revolution, yet the British just wouldn't leave the country. They share no borders, no dispute whose land it was, but the British still stayed to subjugate the people of Ireland.
Now how is it the same?

You're premise is flawed. You state that "most states supported the IRA". That simply is not factual.
Secondly...you simply state that "Muslims are making a noise".
Is that what you call the kidnappings, car bombs, IED's, beheadings, riots, killing of nuns, burning of churches and threatening the Pope with murder by radical islamics? That's JUST "making a noise"??
Wake up my friend. Radical islam is evil and a threat to decent people everywhere.

I'm 58 years old and been all over the USA. In my whole entire life, I have not heard one person condone the IRA. In fact quite the opposite, they were also condemned as terrorists. However it was an age old conflict between two factions within the UK. Did you want us to interfere? No, you wouldn't want us to. It seams to me you are just creating hype to condemn us.

In this country it is the national government which deals with foreign policy, not the states. So that the "states" supported the IRA is highly erroneous.

that is an interesting point. the answer is obvious.see what u make of this; "Torture may be worse now in Iraq than under Saddam Hussein", the UN's chief anti-torture expert says.
terrorists anywhere should be condemned, but the US president's actions are not healing the world. he is ripping it apart. democracy, in a country where individuals who influence the multimedia rule the roost, is bound to throw up some anachronisms like bush. it's upto the americans to redeem themselves

You want the truth. Because America is ignorant. Of course you probably know that by now. Dont get me wrong not all are like that but those who are speakin the loudest do. I mean you also have the School of America who are training terrorists that live in South America. (Hundreds of dead union workers cant be wrong) but noone seems to know or even care in america. If it isn't happening to us in america then why should we sweat it? That's the american way of life.
