My husbands name was not put on it, as they were very young when she was born. A name change was started years ago, but not finished as thought and i hav e recently learned it may have been. How can I verify it with out her mothers help. My husband is deployed in Afganistan right now and cannot help me. I need to know what my step daughter's legal name is. HELP ANYONE????

most health units will have these records on file along with being able to file for a new ss card. you will need both. bring your marriage license with you to prove you are the childs stepmother and 2 proofs of address. something that was mailed to you with your name on it and something that was mailed with her name on it if you can something with both of your names on it.

You can most likely go to the town hall/registrar where either a) the original birth certificate was filed, or b) where the changed birth certificate was applied for (as they might be different). That said, it might be a bit difficult since you are not the legal guardian of the child to get the information, but once you're in contact with the town office, they should also be able to help answer more of your questions.

The court house where the name change was filed should have a record of it. You can also get a copy of her birth certificate from the county court house in the county she was born in. Hope this helps.
