It is definitely a species which characteristics between tree dwellers like chimps and upright open land dwellers like humans. Whether they were ancestors to the Homo genus is yet to be determined - there are other species in about the same time frame which might have been the ancestor so this species might have been an evolutionary dead end - or they might discover more specimens and it will fit in as one of our ancestors. Nevertheless it is a very important find.

Strictly speaking, all species are transitional. That said, keep in mind that australopithecines were around for a longer amount of time than modern humans have been around. So they were probably well adapted to their environment, even if other evolutionary branches formed during their tenure on Earth.
