British commercial popular music, which started off with a hyped up - for the moronic sections of the media - match between 'north' (Oasis) and 'south' (Blur) - most of the musicians even rubbed up against the first Labour prime minister (who wanted to show us all he was - er - 'groovy') when he won his post in 1997.
Needless to say, Britpop is now dust, and the ones who smiled at the cameras at Downing Street (or wherever it was where the Prime Minister had his 'blues party') now make statements of regret...was the Spice Girls ever part of this particular circus amongst the many they eventually ended up in?
Gypsie...Jarvis Cocker is from Sheffield.

britpop was and still is seen as one of the defining moments of british pop music and popular culture in the early 90s though to be precise it started as far 1994. bands like blur, suede, oasis and pulp led the alternative music scene and thus propelled indie music as it was known, into the mainstream. two of the memorable moments of which i could remember was the bitter rivalry between middle class essex boys blur led by damon albarn and working class mancunians oasis hence the gallagher brothers liam and noel in the charts. blur's countrylife and oasis's roll with it went head to head in the UK singles chart- only for blur to pip oasis at no.1.
there was also the cool Britannia thing going on involving the then known 'new labour' and people like noel gallagher hanging out with tony blair. cool britania was a phrase that was echoed during the early 90s though britpop wasn't just about the music- it was also a trend, a musical sub-culture which when it was launched was seen as an response against so-called conservative values and 80s yuppy culture. the clothes, the attitude, drugs, rock'n'roll, sex- denoted some of the examples of the britpop phenomenon back then.

i've got constantly been a Britpop kinda lady. i grow to be a extensive fan of suede, pulp and of greater imprecise bands like menswe@r and mansun. i admire early Placebo too. i did like some grunge, exceedingly nirvana, yet as i say, my heart lay with britpop. it nonetheless does, i've got stored all the previous stuff from 1996 onwards. i nonetheless pay attention to it now, it brings lower back super concepts.
