Size, armor, armaments, and speed.
Corvettes ( a british classification),are the smallest and fastest of the three warship classes.they have little or no armor., and are about the size of a destryer escort vessel. (the American equivalent ship). They are very fast and have numerous smaller calibre guns and sometimes depth charges.
Destroyers are fast ships, fairly small but have a lot of smaller guns, (5 in. and smaller), antiaircraft guns, anti-submarine depth charges, and a lot of torpedoes. Their full name is torpedo boat destroyer. Today, they carry ship to ship missiles and antisubmarine torpedos or missile-torpedos. And gatlimg anti-missile guns, for close in defense. (chain guns). Also, anti-missile missiles.
Destroyers are used as as escort vessels for multi-ship battle groups which usually center about an aircraft carrier. They are also used as screening vessels, or picket shgips ranging 60 +} miles away form the group to dtect incoming warplanes and missiles. (they sewrved this role during W.W. 2 to down incoming Japanese kamikaze planes.Destroyers actively also hunt submarines to protect the battle group.
Frigates are larger than destroyers but serve the same functions as them. They are better armored. (thicker plate to withstand enemy shells..) usually located on the upper and sometimes lower deck.( Many destroyers have little or no armour.)
Frigates do all the destroyer functions but often stand alone.
They are fast vessels. and usually have armor for protection. They can be sent into hostile areas to give the message that their navy is prepared to use force, or they can serve blockade dury or rescue nationals threatened in a foreign country. Modern frigates have formidable impressive missile batteries. They also can carry cruise missile which have a very great range., and accuracy. Their guns are bigger and have multifire capability with multifunction shell capability.
Cruisers can do most of the the functions of destroyers and all those of frigates. But they are slower. They are well armored, (often 10 in. or more thick. Their weaponry is more extensive, and heavier calibre. They can carry any seagoing missiles that their navy posseses. They usually escort aircraft carriers and less often battleships (that are almost completely phased out. (though they did participate in operation desert storm.)

Size (it matters.) A frigate is the smallest, followed by the destroyer. Cruisers are the largest gunships around anymore, since the battleship has all but gone away. Use of missles, torpedoes, and aircraft have made the big guns of the battleship obsolete.

The difference is size, gross tonnage, and size of guns. In the days of ships of the line a frigate was a small fast boat. Today it is bigger than a destroyer, which is small. battle ship is bigger than a cruiser.WW II carriers were the same size as the battleships.

A destroyer is the smallest and fastest it is used in escort duty and submarine hunting. A frigate is heavily armed and very fast, usually has an attack helicopter on it. A cruiser is huge, almost as pig as a pocker battleship. It is very heavily armed and extremly durable with heavy duty armour and massive guns.
