I used to take a commuter prepare into Union Station for 5 years on a daily basis, so i be attentive to what i'm speaking approximately. The issues human beings reported above are sturdy, yet i assume you're searching for issues that are interior sight Union Station. properly the Sears Tower is approximately 2 blocks away - an exceedingly common walk down Adams (the line you come out on once you bypass away Union Station). in case you have somewhat extra time, walk further east down Adams (some 20 minute walk) and you will ultimately bump impressive into the artwork Institute. The architectural boat excursion the guy above reported is between the wonderful issues to do in Chicago, even though it would not sound such as you will have adequate time for that. So i could recommend the Sears Tower for ease of getting to at as quickly as with little or no hazard of having lost.

Just head east a few block and you are in the center of the loop. On the way you can stop at the Sears Tower. You can catch the 151 bus right in front of the station and go down Michigan Avenue.
If you are going first class there is a very nice lounge in the station with free snacks and drinks.
You can get good information at the Amtrak Train Forum at this site:

Downtown Chicago has been expanding around Union Station, so there is plenty to do. The sears tower is a few blocks east on Jackson. There is also a Giordano's pizza location near there on Jackson also. (A deep dish spinach pizza is excellent. At lunch time they have quick 'mini pizzas' available.) Or if you are in to Greek, Greek town is a few blocks west (across the Freeway). You can also stroll to see some of the architecture nearby. The financial district is around La Salle, just a few blocks east. There are a lot of older buildings there.
If you are in to shopping, there are also plenty of retail outlets near there. You can walk down to state street (about 3/4 mile) to shop at a number of different stores (including Carson's and the former Marshall Fields - both of which are also great architecturally) A few blocks east of that is Grant Park.
If the weather is bad you could wonder around the Chicago pedway. (Though you have to walk a bit through the elements to get to the first building.) A trip on the L should also be added. The Quincy station (near Sears tower) is a good one to get on - it has been remodeled in authentic fashion.

There is a free shuttle service right outside the entrance to Union Station -- it will take you to your choice of any number of places right downtown -- from anywhere along Michigan Avenue to the Museums to Navy Pier.
Good luck.
You'll love Chicago

You could take the bus to Lincoln Park or the Lake shore, Buckingham Square or to the musems, they are alos on the lake fron fron so if you don't have time to tour them you can hang out by the lake , providing it is a nice day, you could also go to Navy Pier alot of things & shops there.
