I'm 19 and in London for school. I'm looking for the back-woods, hole in the wall, secret handshake type places to have a good time and to just see the real of London. I'm not much of a drinker or a sex-addict but I do enjoy going to pubs. Anything is open even exhibits at museums. My budget isn't exstensive but if anyone had any suggestions on where to go, where I'd be able to mingle with Londoners, not other Americans, or tourists would be fantastic!
thanks!

Don't people read the questions on here? Why should Elizabeth join a night class when she's already at school? And for the same reason, how's she supposed to go travelling around Europe?

Elizabeth, I suggest that you head out of the West End (downtown) area, if you want to find the 'real' Londoners. Of course, there are plenty of real Londoners in the city centre, but they're outnumbered by tourists there. There are dozens of districts worth visiting. Try Hampstead or Islington or Chiswick or Hoxton or... well, the list is almost endless.

Check out a website like http://www.fancyapint.com to find the pubs where Londoners drink.

Visit some lesser-known streetmarkets. There's a comprehensive list at http://www.nmtf.co.uk/marketlo.htm

For museums of every kind (all over the country), see http://www.24hourmuseum.org.uk

Also, buy a copy of Time Out magazine to find the best exhibitions and events. The most enjoyable rock gigs can often be the little ones that cost under £10, not the megastar £50 performances at the big stadiums.

Good luck!

Enroll in night classes, anything from car maintenance to speaking a different lanaguage, contact your local library for details. They should be starting about now.
If you like to get away at weekend on a budget there are some very active Youth Hostelling Groups in London - arranging Barn Dances, pub evenings, walks, slide shows and trips to the countryside. Depending where you are in London you can join Ealing, Harlow or Barnet groups

I lived in London for 6 months before my visa expired (i'm american) and that i will actual inform you that London has some thing for all and various. i'm no longer confident what your scene is, so i will attempt to furnish you some various ideas. if you're searching for some flea-marketplace style events then there's a magnificent one in Angel. they have an open marketplace as well as some indoor procuring. i trust the marketplace is basically open in the course of the day, yet i ought to correctly be incorrect. there is also a chilled (small) marketplace in Arbour sq. (Zone a million, East London), this marketplace is fairly community so that you're going to come across a tremendous style of people, products, and languages. This marketplace is basically open in the course of the day. and that i understand you do not desire touristy issues, yet please make confident you a minimum of do the riverwalk down the Thames in direction of the London eye, because there's a magnificent marketplace, street entertainers, and foodstuff alongside the way. For time-honored procuring inspect Kensington severe street, Regent's street, and Oxford circus. make confident you shuttle down Brick Lane for a number of London's up-and-coming song, style, and foodstuff (the acceptable curry is at a cafe talked about as Monsoon on Brick Lane). once you be a vegan (or maybe in case your no longer) eat on the London Bus. Brick Lane is beginning to change into more advantageous universal, yet its nonetheless a favorite for locals. if you're into the ingesting scene (yet no longer paying 20 pound conceal expenditures for clubbing) there are 2 tremendous places in East London that are open late on the weekends. Mary Janes and The Abbey. both are placed in Aldgate, close to to the Tower Hill DLR station. both bars furnish an outstanding decision of both low value and pricer beers, cocktails, champagne, and liquors and both in many circumstances have stay djs till 2am. the ambience in both is fairly elegant yet relaxing. in reality in case you decide on to stay faraway from touristy issues, persist with East London. The dodgy parts of East London that all and various is speaking about are interior the far reaches previous zone 2. extremely i ought to sense a lot less secure walking round interior the west end because there are pickpocketers concentrated on vacationers everywhere. besides have an excellent time!

Get the book "London for Free" by Brian Butler (it's available on Amazon). It describes tons of cool free things to do, many of which are known only by the locals. I spent months in London during numerous trips, and I never did get around to seeing everything in the book I wanted to see.
