In 1811 reference to a "pig" as a Bow Street Runner-the early police force, named after the location of their headquarters. Before that, the term "pig" had been used as early as the mid-1500s to refer to a person who is heartly disliked. The term came up again by the hippys in the 1960s when OZ magazine showed a picture of a pig dressed as a police officer on the front cover.

As far as I know, it came into being in the sixties when there was a very strong anti-establisment movement. The police were rightfully viewed as the enforcers of the establishment's laws, and were therefore the enemy. How PIG became the actual derogatory term for cop, who knows?

I'm just guessing, but I think it started in the 1960's during the protest movements when people were protesting the draft and the War in Viet Nam, I think the hippies gave them that name. Don't ask me why or how.
