It bothers me to no end to see an adult smoke around any child, born or not. I never say anything, but it just kills me. I'd like to take the cigarette out of their hand and stomp it into the ground. They can ruin their own health, but not a child's.

Yes, but it is her choice.
I have 4 kids and I smoke. I stopped(abstaining from it except for 1 cig here and there because it caused me so much stress).
Ever since women have been able to smoke tobacco, drink alcohol, or caffeine, etc., down through history, they have and their children have been born ok. Not saying it doesn't cause problems, but the panic over this has been EXTREMELY overrated. My doc told me that what actually causes low birth-rate in smoking mothers is the fact that the nicotene causes lower levels of Folic Acid which is essential before and during pregnancy. You can take supplements, as my doc supplied me with because he knew I would not be able to TOTALLY quit and trying to quit while pregnant DOES cause stress to the fetus. However, he DID advise me to quit.
So while I am against smoking, drinking,or eating anything that can possibly in ANY way cause problems while pregnant, I realize that you have to be sensible and not go overboard about these things.
It is ok to care about others, but TOO many people mind everyone else's business when they should be minding their own, that is what causes problems today.
P.S. All 4 of my children were 8 to 9 pounds at birth. The average birth weight is I believe 7 1/2 lbs. nationwide.
To Gupeter, I did NOT say that my mother did it so it's ok. You talk about uneducated people. Apparently YOU cannot read or comprehend what someone else writes. Or is it that you did not take the time to read everything in my answer because you don't care? Do YOU have any kids?
And to everyone else ragging on women/people who smoke, how is a cig worse than abortion? That KILLS the fetus/child. Isn't that supposed to be a woman's right too? I guess THAT is ok though.

YESSS!!!! And this my reasoning:
Cuz when the baby come out all defected and stuff, then you don't wanna the child either cuz you can't take care of a defected baby that defects were based on your decision to smoke, drink, w/e, then you have a growing problem w/ all these women havin' babies and not stepping up to the plate to take care of 'em!! If you can lay there and make the baby, then you BETTER be equiped to take care of the baby especcialy if you do somthin' you ain't got no business w/ the baby in your body dependin' on you and your nutrients and not-so-nutrients, so think, do you really want to just be the cause of another statistic!
PS: I'm not saying that whoever has a baby w/ birth defects is the cause of it, because i know that that is not always the case, but if you KNOW your doing something that is unhealthful to the baby and you ARENT' quitting or just takin' a break for the baby's sake, karma is gonna take care of your sorry butt!! And that's speakin' from the heart. AND YES IT TOTALLY DOES BOTHER ME!! AND PPL DONT' BE TRYNA BE PROUD ABOUT YOU SMOKIN' W/ YOUR CHILDREN AND SASHAYING AROUND TALKIN' ABOUT HOW HEALTHY THEY ARE CUZ THINK...WAT IF IT WERE YOU WELL REALLY YOUR BABY!!!?????

Yes, it really bothers me to see pregnant women smoking. I am a smoker (I have been trying to quit) I have been pregnant three times and didn't smoke during any of my pregnancies. Not smoking, drinking or doing drugs is the least women can do for their unborn babies. Yes, I have said something to pregnant women that smoke....not because I was trying to be rude or put them down....but hoping that maybe if I could say something that would make them realize how bad it was for their baby that they would quit. I don't and wouldn't just walk up randomly to people on the street and tell them....they were all women I had contact with in someway....I have advised pregnant women on here not to smoke. What people do with the advice is their choice. I just hate to see pregnant women smoking...

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it bothers me sooooooooooooo much! I once saw this lady smoking and she was really pregnant and she had another baby on her lap. I wanted to say something to her but what do you say? You are an idiot!? And what is worse is that it doesn't end in the womb. They will smoke with that child in the car with all the windows rolled up, they will smoke at home and they child will go to school and the other kids will smell the smoke on them and make fun of them for smelling bad, and then when the child is in high school the teacher will think that the child is a smoker because they smell so strongly of smoke. This all happened to me. And it was horrible! And that is why I hate it so much. Smoke is a killer. Why cant people see that? I wish that smoking was banned! Everywhere. It is banned in the town that I live in in all bars and restaurants. And it is SOOOOOOOOOOOOO awesome! And when I go out of town and I walk in someplace and I smell the smoke I just wish that I was back home breathing clean air.

Well yes of course it does. A person cannot take a bit of time off from smoking or drinking to make sure that your child..... the one that will be with you for the rest of your life be OK? Usual excuse is my momma did it and I'm Ok. The other answerer Diana made this point. But if there is any possibility for harm.... why would you with the most important thing in life? What it really comes down to.... and people will cast stones... the uneducated will come up with reasons to justify doing most anything.

I think it is totally wrong to smoke when you're pregnant. I just found out I was prego 8 weeks ago and have been a smoker for years, I have always had a hard time when trying to quit, but when it came to another human's health it was an easy choice to quit, my parents wanted me to start life with the best health possible and I am going to do the same for my child. Seriously, the second you get pregnant it's not all about you anymore!

It does bother me for several reasons. None of us can deny the negative effects that smoking has on the fetus. It's selfish to inflict your unhealthy habit on an innocent child that has no say and no defense. On a personal level it really bothers me because I have been trying to get pregnant for three years with no luck and am currently ungoing fertility treatments. It bothers me to see these women who had such an easy time getting pregnant and then abuse their child, when I am having so much trouble.
I have and will continue to say something. Also, I am a former smoker so I know its an addiction and difficult to quit...blah...blah blah...

yes, it makes me sad that anyone smokes, but I also know how hard it is to stop. I quit smoking when I found out I was preg w/ my first daughter, and it was very hard. I would never say anything to anyone, but I do say a quick prayer in my head when I see someone smoking (esp if they are pregnant or have a child with them close by).

Yes, it bothers me alot. I've never said anything to anyone though. If someone around me is smoking I get up and leave. My family members that smoke know how I feel and respect me enough not to smoke around me which I appreciate.
